One of the textural looks that I’ve designed for my client, Judith, is a barn door wood. This wood will be used as doors on a track for a couple of storage units and a console unit.
My contractor actually had real barn wood, but it was too dark and warped. So we decided to replicate this look to our exact specifications; always the best course, when it can be done.
Here is a step-by-step easy peasy process to get the look that I wanted.
STEP 1
I bought and cut to size, very rough unfinished pine planks, 12″ in width. Normally I would have distressed the wood, but these were just rough enough. Gave them a good sanding, but not too much because I wanted to maintain the roughness. I used a light and dark coloured paint that is consistent with the paint used in Judith’s condo; rags, a brush and water.
STEP 2
I painted the planks, front and back, with very watered down dark coloured paint.
STEP 3
Then while still wet, brushed on light paint. Using a rag, blended in the light paint over most of the surface.
STEP 4
Using a paint brush with unwatered down paint, dappled it on where I wanted highlighted areas and ragged it through again.
Viola!
Let dry over night. No varnishing is required.
So easy to do. This took about 1 hour to complete.
Cheers!
